"The number one professional development experience I’ve engaged in has been the Agency by Design Oakland Fellowship. To be given time to practice the protocols, collaborate with fellows, and receive coaching made a huge difference to me and my students." - Diana Culmer, Grass Valley Elementary School, OUSD, 2016 Alameda County Teacher of the Year, 26 years teaching
Since 2014 we’ve gathered cohorts of Oakland and Bay Area educators to participate in professional learning communities that focus on maker-centered learning and teacher-led classroom inquiry. Over the course of the school year fellows dive deeply into the pedagogical framework and instructional strategies of maker-centered learning, experimenting in their classroom practice and reflecting within the learning cohort. Teachers then choose a focus area to deepen their practice and participate in teacher-led action research in which they design interventions, collect data and documentation, reflect, and iterate. Fellows showcase their inquiry work both through digital pictures of practice and at a culminating event. Teachers who participate in the fellowship have access to one‐on‐one coaching and school site professional development. Fellows receive a teacher stipend for their participation.
This year’s culminating event will take place on Saturday, May 4, 2019, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. We will have more information about the culminating event in Spring 2019.
2019-2020 Fellowship Applications will be available after the culminating event.
